FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

Here are the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions that we regularly receive.

Essential oils are natural extracts derived from various parts of aromatic herbs and trees, including leaves, flowers, bark, roots, wood, seeds, and peels. They can be obtained through different methods such as hydro-distillation, cold pressing, solvent extraction, or supercritical CO₂ extraction. These oils may appear as pure essential oils, aromatic compounds, concretes, or natural perfumes, depending on the extraction process and plant source.
Essential oils are potent, water-repelling liquids rich in aromatic compounds naturally present in plants. These oils are typically obtained through methods such as distillation, cold pressing, or solvent extraction. Widely used in industries like perfumery, aromatherapy, skincare, incense production, and natural medicine, they also serve as flavor enhancers in food and beverages. Due to their versatility and distinct fragrances, essential oils hold significant value in both the fragrance and food sectors.
Carrier oils may not get as much attention as essential oils due to their lack of strong therapeutic compounds, but they are vital when it comes to applying essential oils to the skin. They serve as a gentle and effective base, making topical use safer and more comfortable. It’s worth exploring the important role these oils play and why every essential oil enthusiast should keep them on hand.
Absolutes are intensely aromatic liquids derived from plant materials such as leaves, flowers, bark, roots, wood, seeds, or peels of herbs and trees. Unlike essential oils, which are typically obtained through steam distillation, absolutes are produced using solvent extraction methods. This process helps capture a richer, more complete fragrance profile of the plant. Absolutes are completely free of wax and are especially valued in perfumery due to their deep, concentrated scent. While they share similarities with essential oils in plant origin, their unique extraction method sets them apart.
Hydrosols, often referred to as floral waters, distillates, or hydroflorates, are the aromatic waters left behind after steam distillation of plant materials. While they share similar properties with essential oils, they are far more diluted and gentle. During the distillation process, steam passes through the plant material, causing it to release its aromatic compounds. These rise with the steam, and once cooled, the essential oil separates out. What remains is the subtly fragrant water infused with the essence of the plant—this is what we call a hydrosol. It’s a soothing and mild alternative to essential oils, perfect for skincare, aromatherapy, and more.
Essential oils are incredibly potent and should always be diluted before applying them to the skin.
The safest and most effective way to do this is by mixing them with a carrier oil. Choose a high-quality, cold-pressed vegetable oil as your base—popular options include almond, apricot kernel, hazelnut, olive, macadamia, kukui, wheatgerm, grapeseed, and sesame oils. To keep your carrier oils fresh, store them in a cool, dark place. Adding around 10% jojoba oil can help increase the stability and shelf life of your blend. Vitamin E oil is another great addition, known for its antioxidant properties, which help preserve the blend longer. It's best to prepare small quantities that can be used within a short period. For extended storage, keep your carrier oils, essential oils, and custom blends in the refrigerator.
Essential oils can be absorbed by the body through three primary methods: topical application, inhalation, or ingestion. Within each method, there are various techniques for use. For example, essential oils can be applied to the skin through compresses, sprays, baths, or massages. The chosen method depends on the intended outcome and the specific essential oil being used. Some oils, due to their chemical properties, may cause skin irritation and require dilution or may be more effective when inhaled. As with all essential oils, it is crucial never to apply them undiluted to the skin and to avoid ingesting them unless under the guidance of a trained professional.
Essential oils can be used in the following ways:
  • • Baths
  • • Massages
  • • Inhalations
  • • Facial steam
  • • Diffusers
  • • Medical treatments
To maintain the potency and preserve the therapeutic benefits of your essential oils, it's important to store them properly:
  • • Use appropriate containers or bottles for storage.
  • • Always ensure the bottle cap is securely closed.
  • • Keep your oils in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight.
  • • Avoid exposing them to heat sources.
  • • Store oils on surfaces that won’t be damaged easily.
While some individuals may have more sensitive skin, everyone’s eyes are particularly vulnerable. If essential oils accidentally get into your eyes, it's important to know how to respond. Since essential oils don’t mix with water, you’ll need a substance that can safely dilute the oil and allow you to flush it away. The best option is milk or cream. If essential oils get into your eyes, immediately rinse the affected area with milk or cream to stop the burning sensation, which should subside almost instantly. Afterward, rinse with clean water to remove any milk residue. If irritation persists, seek advice from a healthcare professional.
